The winners of the Edition 2, Concept Category award is Tommy Ashby and Nicholas Gardner. Tommy and Nicholas have been awarded for the creation of the unique and elegant Crystal Wedge Table.
19mm Staron® in Bright White has been used as the tabletop for this one off side table piece. The tabletop itself is 750mm in diameter, and features three victorian ash legs made from recycled timber (old victorian ash fence posts, turned and oiled). These were deliberately made large and rather rustic looking to contrast with the minimalism of the sharp white tabletop.
The outside edge of the Staron® tabletop was CNC routed then lightly hand sanded. The three inner holes were drilled by hand, and the left over plugs kept for use later on. The most interesting feature of the table is the way the legs attach. Holes were drilled in the Staron® sheet, and a section of the legs pass through.
The table then sits on a wider section of the leg a little further down. These legs were partially sawn to create a split in the top of them, into which a faceted wedge (the left over Staron® which came from the holes that were drilled) was hammered. This expands them outwards and locks them in place. Rather than sanding the wedges down, they were left sticking out from the tabletop, along with the top of the legs, to create an interesting and striking feature.
“I chose Staron® because of its excellent properties and the way they suited this project - rigidity and strength especially. This meant that the design could be kept as simple as possible, without the need for extra support or bracing”, says Tommy of the winning design.

JUDGES' COMMENTS
''A deceptively simple and elegantly detailed and executed design." Stephen Varady, Kann Finch Group
''The table design illustrates the strength of the material and its ability to be refined and streamlined. It challenges the use of the material and illustrates Staron® as can be fine, uniquely crafted and manipulated to suit traditional construction techniques." Amanda Stanaway, Woods Bagot Pty Ltd
"The entries to this new category for the competition were all of a high standard, and it was exciting to see the variety of applications designers imagine for Staron®. The winning entry, Crystal Wedge Table by Tommy Ashby and Nicholas Gardner, brought a beautiful, crafted aesthetic that is not often associated with Staron® as a material. It demonstrates the versatility of the product to be used at any scale."
